YouTube is home to tons and tons of videos, and many of them are ideal for kids to watch. It has everything from cartoons to TV episodes to science videos to early learning programs.
Children can easily watch videos of their favorite characters. What happens when the video ends and the kids start looking for other things to watch on their own? which is why you need to turn on YouTube parental controls.
More than 100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute, and some of it may be inappropriate for kids.
After all, these are not funny cat videos. It is therefore advisable to use YouTube’s parental controls. It is already built and does a good job of providing the first line of protection against displaying inappropriate videos.
Additionally, it’s free. While it does not guarantee that all inappropriate videos can be successfully banned, it does a good job of showing more appropriate videos to children. Parental control on YouTube is called “Safety Mode.”
Note: Once Safety Mode is activated, the site uses age-limit settings, community flagging, and other details to help children filter inappropriate videos.
YouTube’s Safety Mode is also integrated with Google’s SafeSearch, so when you turn on Safety Mode on YouTube, you automatically activate the SafeSearch feature on Google.
Safety Mode is a browser feature, so when you turn it on, it stays the same when watching YouTube videos in that browser. So even if you are not logged in to your YouTube account and searching on YouTube for videos, the security mode still works.
Additionally, you need to manually turn on Safety Mode on those browsers. So if you have more than one browser on your computer, you need to launch every browser, go to YouTube, log in, and activate Safety Mode.
Similarly, you need to turn on the feature one by one on the different mobile devices you use. To keep our kids safe from watching videos rated 18+ on YouTube, we have provided a step-by-step process to turn on YouTube parental controls on iPhones, iPads, computers, Android devices, and mobile browsers.

Changing the safety mode on YouTube on your computer helps children filter out inappropriate videos.
As mentioned earlier, once you turn on Safety Mode, it activates SafeSearch on Google and enables more YouTube parental controls.
1. Start the browser window and type www.youtube.com in the web address bar.

2. In the upper right corner of the screen, click the blue Sign In button to be prompted to sign in. After YouTube has loaded, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the security button.

3. Click, and then click the Save button. To lock these changes so no one can change them without your password, click “Lock security in this browser.”
You will be asked to enter your password. Once that information is entered, the feature is locked and can only be unlocked by re-entering your password.

You will know that parental control is active when you search. The phrase at the top of the search results says, “Some results have been deleted because security mode is enabled.” In this scenario, we used the Google Chrome browser to enable YouTube parental controls.
This is the next step for any browser you use after you log in to YouTube with your user account. You want to do this for any browser on your computer that you think your kids can use to access YouTube.
How to set YOUTUBE parental control on iPhone or iPod Touch
If you give your iPhone or iPod touch to your children to watch videos, you may want to enable parental controls.
Although the YouTube app for iPhones and iPod Touch devices does not support the Safety Mode feature, there is a SafeSearch option, which helps with the types of search results that are returned.
Safety Mode on YouTube is a good option when it comes to filtering inappropriate videos. The good news is that you can still turn on Safety Mode if your child chooses to watch YouTube using the browser.
Here’s how to enable Safety Mode on YouTube when using a browser window to watch videos.
