Professional Life

Zaráte traveled from Mexico to the United States when she was twelve, where she was shown for her petite size. She began her career as part of the “Fairy Sisters” act, eventually collaborating with Francis Joseph Flynn (billed as “General Mite”) to tour globally. The Washington Post billed her as the “marvelous Mexican midget” in 1889, describing her as “a little but all powerful magnet to pull the public.”

An 1876 book published by Oxford University recounted a visit to Zaráte made by numerous medical specialists. They all could not confirm that she was twelve years old, but they could determine that she was at least six years old based on her dental development. Her height at the time was 20 in (510 mm).

Her calf circumference was 4 in (100 mm), 1 in (25 mm) larger than the thumb of an ordinary adult male. She was with her parents at the time and was determined to be healthy and clever, capable of speaking some English in addition to her native Spanish.
